I know it’s politically incorrect to hate an Apple product these days. They are after all single handedly making it possible for us to pretend we are in a movie with our own soundtrack through the wonder of the ipod. (I always thought a good soundtrack was all reality was really missing.) However, Quicktime just ticks me off. Why? I realize it’s free and helps you media on your pc or mac but I have collected my short grumpy list below.
- Everytime I pull up a file with Quicktime the program brings up the equivilant of a pop-up window trying to get me to upgrade to “Quicktime Pro” for only $30. I’ve looked at Quicktime Pro and I don’t want it.  I already have other programs that take care of the additional functionality Pro would offer me so I’m not interested in having to pause and select that I’m not interested each and every time I use it’s free brother. Is there a quick and easy “don’t show this again” checkbox? Not that I have seen.
- Quicktime Picture Viewer! Somehow this nifty program decided it was responsible for helping me with each and every picture type (jpeg, png, bmp, gif, etc..) I want to look at. What is annoying is that I can’t “scroll” through my pictures or have them play in a slideshow using Picture Viewer. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer allows me to do this but if Quicktime’s version offers it I couldn’t see how to activate it. I am trying to sort through a bunch of recovered photos right now because a hard drive decided to take a vacation and the last thing I want to do is select each and every picture from a folder to have it expand onto the screen.  If I only had one monitor hooked up to my computer (I have two) it would seriously slow me down - as it is I’m just annoyed at having to do it.
- Quicktime Picture Viewer2 - When I pull up the Picture Viewer program on it’s own (instead of clicking on a picture) it refuses to listen much like a bratty 8 year old child. I’m serious - I click on the “X” box and it simply ignores me. I’m forced to do a ctrl+alt+del and bring up the task manager in order to send it to it’s room.
Okay, granted they are small annoyances but particularly with the picture sorting I’ve been doing they are annoyances I’ve had to deal with quite frequently. It’s a bit like having a paper cut on your finger while typing on the computer. You don’t experience any serious pain but over time you get fed up with typing because of it. Don’t get me wrong Quicktime pales in comparison to annoying software like Real with their RealPlayer. However, I expect more from Apple who has typically been a class act in their hardware and software offerings.
