Google Sucks at SSL’s

by admin on August 2, 2007

I’m sitting in SEOClass in New York and Brad Geddes just made the comment “Google actually sucks at SSL’s”.  Aside from enjoying it when people say Google sucks I was amused because the example he showed is something that I run into quite regularly.

I use Google Adsense on a few small hobby sites and thus I login semi-regularly.  I run a number of browsers but IE 7 probably most often which automatically brings to the user’s attention certain irregularities on sites that are visited.  For example, when I try to visit Adsense I see the following:

So there it is – Adsense’s SSL doesn’t match the address and unless I turn off the “warnings” that IE 7 shows me automatically I will see this each and every time I visit.  Google is obviously a well known company and I’m not concerned about trusting the Adsense site because of this error.  But if I was going to a lesser known company it might result in my abandoning the visit.Â

The point: check that the details of your site are not tripping users up or sending them away when they visit.  The devil is in the details.
