I’m sitting in SEOClass in New York and Brad Geddes just made the comment “Google actually sucks at SSL’s”. Aside from enjoying it when people say Google sucks I was amused because the example he showed is something that I run into quite regularly.
I use Google Adsense on a few small hobby sites and thus I login semi-regularly. I run a number of browsers but IE 7 probably most often which automatically brings to the user’s attention certain irregularities on sites that are visited. For example, when I try to visit Adsense I see the following:

So there it is - Adsense’s SSL doesn’t match the address and unless I turn off the “warnings” that IE 7 shows me automatically I will see this each and every time I visit. Google is obviously a well known company and I’m not concerned about trusting the Adsense site because of this error. But if I was going to a lesser known company it might result in my abandoning the visit.Â
The point: check that the details of your site are not tripping users up or sending them away when they visit. The devil is in the details.
